Lucian Freud
1922-2011Biography
Lucian Freud was a British painter known for his powerful and often unsettling portraits, as well as his nudes and landscapes. Born in Berlin, Freud moved to London with his family in 1933 to escape the rise of Nazism in Germany. He studied at the Central School of Art and the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing, and later at the Cedric Morris's East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing. Freud was known for his intense and prolonged sittings with his models, which allowed him to capture their psychological state as well as their physical appearance. His paintings often featured thickly impastoed surfaces, which added to the visceral quality of his work. Freud had numerous solo exhibitions throughout his career, including retrospectives at the Tate in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
