John Tunnard
1900-1971Biography
John Tunnard was a British artist known for his surrealist and abstract paintings. He was associated with the British Surrealist movement, which emerged in the 1930s and sought to challenge traditional artistic conventions by exploring the subconscious and the irrational. Tunnard's early work was influenced by the landscapes of his native Cornwall, but he began to experiment with abstraction and surrealism in the 1930s, after encountering the work of Salvador Dali and other Surrealist artists. His paintings often feature strange and dreamlike juxtapositions of objects, such as birds, boats, and geometric shapes, rendered in a range of bright and unusual colours. Tunnard's work was well received during his lifetime, and he exhibited regularly in both Britain and the United States. However, his reputation declined somewhat in the years after his death, and it was not until the 1990s that a renewed interest in his work emerged. Today, Tunnard is regarded as an important figure in the history of British art, and his paintings are held in many public and private collections.
