William Lionel Wyllie

William Lionel Wyllie was a British artist who specialized in marine painting and etching. He was born in London and studied at Heatherley's School of Fine Art and the Royal Academy Schools. Wyllie became an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1897 and a full member in 1907. Wyllie's most famous work is probably his large painting "The Battle of Trafalgar" which depicts the famous naval battle in which Admiral Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets. He was also known for his etchings and engravings, many of which depict ships and the sea. Wyllie was a prolific artist and his works can be found in many public and private collections, including the National Maritime Museum in London and the Royal Collection. He was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1918 for his services to naval art.
