Algernon Cecil Newton was a British painter and illustrator associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he studied under Henry Tonks and Frederick Brown. Newton's work was primarily focused on historical and mythological subjects, often with an emphasis on the female form. He was also a prolific illustrator, contributing to publications such as The Strand Magazine and The Tatler.
During World War I, Newton served as an ambulance driver for the British Red Cross in France, where he also painted landscapes and portraits of soldiers. After the war, he continued to paint and exhibit his work, and was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1952. Algernon Cecil Newton died in 1968, leaving behind a body of work that is characterized by its intricate detail, vivid colour, and classical influences.
