Henry Burdon Richardson

Henry Burdon Richardson was a British painter and illustrator known for his landscapes and genre scenes. He was born in London and trained at the Royal Academy Schools where he won a silver medal for his work. Richardson specialised in painting rural scenes and was known for his attention to detail and realism. He painted many scenes of the English countryside, particularly around Surrey where he lived for many years. Richardson also traveled widely in Europe and painted scenes in Italy, Switzerland, and France. In addition to his paintings, Richardson was also a successful illustrator and produced work for a number of publications, including the Illustrated London News and the Strand Magazine. His illustrations were often of rural scenes and he was noted for his ability to capture the character and atmosphere of the English countryside. Richardson was a member of several art societies, including the Royal Society of British Artists, and his work was exhibited widely throughout his lifetime. Today, his paintings are held in many public and private collections, including the Tate Gallery in London.
