Daniil Stepanov
1882-1937Biography
Daniil Stepanov was a Russian painter associated with the movement of Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers). He was born in Moscow and studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he was a student of Valentin Serov. Stepanov's early work was influenced by the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists, but later he turned to more traditional painting techniques.
Stepanov became a member of the Peredvizhniki in 1907 and exhibited with the group until 1917. He painted a wide range of subjects, including landscapes, portraits, and genre scenes. He also worked as an illustrator and designed sets for the Moscow Art Theatre. Stepanov's reputation suffered during the Soviet period due to his association with the pre-Revolutionary art world. He was arrested in 1937 and executed on charges of "anti-Soviet activity." However, his work has since been rediscovered and recognized for its contributions to Russian art.
