Vasiliy Shukhaev
1887-1973Biography
Vasiliy Ivanovich Shukhaev was a Russian painter known for his portraits, landscapes, and still life works. He was born in the town of Glazov in the Udmurt Republic of Russia. Shukhaev studied art at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and later at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. His early works were influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, but he later developed his own style that was characterized by muted colours and simplified forms. Shukhaev's paintings often depicted scenes from everyday life in pre-revolutionary Russia, including peasant life, marketplaces, and rural landscapes. He was particularly skilled at capturing the mood and atmosphere of his subjects, and his works have been praised for their poetic quality. Shukhaev also painted portraits of prominent figures of the time, including writers, musicians, and politicians.During the Soviet period, Shukhaev continued to paint and exhibit his works, although he was not always in favour with the authorities. In the 1930s, he was accused of promoting "bourgeois" art and was briefly imprisoned. However, he continued to produce his art until his death in 1973. Today, Shukhaev's works can be found in many major art museums in Russia, including the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. His paintings are highly sought after by collectors and have sold for high prices at auctions around the world.
