Leopold Survage
1879-1968Biography
Leopold Survage was a Russian-French painter and designer associated with the Cubist and Orphist movements. Born in Moscow, he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture before moving to Paris in 1908, where he was influenced by the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Survage's early work was in a Cubist style, but he later developed an interest in Orphism, a movement characterized by its use of bright colours and geometric forms. He was also involved in designing sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes. Survage's later work was more abstract, reflecting his interest in theosophy and spirituality. He died in Paris in 1968.
