Ethel Spowers
1890-1947Biography
Ethel Spowers was an Australian-born printmaker and painter who spent most of her career in England. She is known for her linocut prints, which were innovative and experimental in their use of colour and composition. Spowers studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne before moving to London in 1923. In London, she studied at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, where she was taught by Claude Flight, a leading figure in the linocut printmaking movement. Spowers went on to exhibit her work widely in England and Australia, and was a member of the Society of Women Artists and the London Group. She died in London in 1947 at the age of 57.
