Keith Vaughan
1912-1977Biography
Keith Vaughan was a British painter known for his abstract landscapes and figure paintings. He was born in Selsey, West Sussex, England, and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1931 to 1936. After serving in World War II, Vaughan returned to painting and became a leading figure in the post-war British art scene. Vaughan's work is characterized by his use of strong lines, bold colours, and simplified forms. His paintings often depict landscapes and figures in abstracted forms, with an emphasis on shape and colour over realistic representation. Vaughan was also known for his diaries, in which he documented his artistic process and personal life. Vaughan was openly gay at a time when homosexuality was illegal in the UK, and this is reflected in his art. His paintings often feature male figures in homoerotic poses or in intimate settings, and his diaries contain many personal reflections on his sexuality and relationships. Vaughan's work is represented in numerous collections, including the Tate in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco.
