Roger Hilton
1911-1975Biography
Roger Hilton was a British abstract painter associated with the St Ives School. He was born in London and trained at the Slade School of Art in the 1930s. After serving in World War II, Hilton moved to St Ives in Cornwall and became a leading figure in the artistic community there. His early works were influenced by European modernism, particularly by artists such as Kandinsky and Miro. In the 1950s and 1960s, Hilton's work became increasingly abstract and gestural, with thickly applied paint and bold, expressive brushstrokes. He was a member of the London Group and the Newlyn Society of Artists, and his work is held in the collections of major museums including Tate, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
