Joseph Mallord William Turner
1775-1850Biography
JMW Turner was an English painter, printmaker and watercolourist, who is considered to be one of the greatest artists in the history of British art. Turner is known for his atmospheric and often dramatic paintings of landscapes, seascapes, and historical events. Turner was born in London in 1775, and from an early age showed a great aptitude for art. He began his career as an architectural draftsman, but quickly turned to painting, exhibiting his first work at the Royal Academy at the age of 15. Turner became a full member of the Royal Academy in 1802. Turner's style evolved over the course of his career, and he is known for his use of light and colour to create atmospheric effects in his paintings. He was a master of watercolour painting, and also created many oil paintings and prints. Turner was particularly fascinated by the sea and ships, and many of his most famous works depict these subjects. Some of Turner's most famous works include "The Fighting Temeraire", "Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway", and "The Slave Ship". In addition to his paintings, Turner was also a prolific writer, and left behind many sketches and notebooks that provide insight into his creative process. Turner died in London in 1851 at the age of 76, and his legacy continues to influence artists today. He bequeathed his extensive collection of paintings and art materials to the British nation, which led to the establishment of the Turner Collection at the Tate Britain museum in London.
