Zinaida Serebriakova
1884-1967Biography
Zinaida Serebriakova was a Russian painter and graphic artist known for her portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes. She was born on December 12, 1884, in Neskuchnoye, Russia, into a family of artists, and studied art in St. Petersburg and Paris. Serebriakova's early work was influenced by the Art Nouveau style, but she later developed her own unique style characterized by a classical approach to form and composition. Her paintings often depicted scenes from her personal life, as well as rural Russian life and folk traditions. During the Russian Revolution and ensuing Civil War, Serebriakova and her family were forced to flee to the countryside. Despite the difficulties she faced during this time, Serebriakova continued to paint and draw, and her work from this period is particularly notable for its emotional intensity. Serebriakova eventually settled in Paris, where she continued to produce art until her death in 1967. She is considered one of the most important female Russian artists of the 20th century, and her work is held in collections around the world.
