Isaac Levitan
1860-1900Biography
Isaac Levitan was a Russian landscape painter who is widely regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 19th century. He was born in Kibarty, Lithuania and spent his childhood in poverty. However, his artistic talent was recognized early on, and he was able to attend the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Levitan's paintings are known for their evocative use of light and colour, and his ability to capture the beauty of the Russian countryside. His works often depict rural landscapes and small villages, and he had a particular talent for portraying the changing seasons and the play of light on water. In addition to his landscapes, Levitan was also an accomplished portrait painter, and he was a member of the influential Peredvizhniki (Wanderers) group of artists, who sought to create art that was accessible to the masses. Despite his relatively short career, Levitan left an enduring legacy and remains one of the most beloved and influential painters in Russian art history.
