Boris Kustodiev was a Russian painter and stage designer, known for his portraits, genre scenes, and depictions of Russian life. Born in Astrakhan, he moved to St. Petersburg to attend art school, where he studied under some of the most prominent artists of the time. Kustodiev's early work was influenced by Russian folk art and the works of French Impressionists. He became known for his vivid use of colour and his ability to capture the essence of Russian life and culture. His paintings often depicted peasant life, festivals, and street scenes in the cities and towns of Russia. Kustodiev's career flourished in the early 20th century, with his paintings being exhibited in Russia and abroad. He also worked as a stage designer for the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, creating sets and costumes for productions of operas and ballets. Kustodiev's later years were marked by health problems, including a diagnosis of tuberculosis. Despite this, he continued to work prolifically, painting until the end of his life.
